JMD Develops First Triplexer Using LTLO™

Multi-Layer Organic Process Surpasses Ceramic in Size and RF Performance

July 14, 2008 - < BACK

Atlanta, GA, July 14, 2008 - Jacket Micro Devices Inc. (JMD) announced today that it has developed the world’s first WiFi/WiMax triplexer using embedded passive components in organic laminates.

Triplexers are key components in consumer wireless products including laptops, mobile Internet devices and cell phones and reduce the need for multi-pole switches resulting in lower cost and lower RF loss.  A WLAN/WiMax triplexer allows a single antenna to be shared for devices that operate in the 2.4-2.5 GHz and 5 GHz WLAN bands and the 2.3-2.7 and 3.3-3.8 GHz WiMax bands. JMD’s Multi-Layer Organic (MLO) technology is the first commercial organic packaging technology to provide high Q RF components embedded into the layers of a printed circuit board or IC substrate.  JMD’s new low temperature laminated organic (LTLO) process is an advanced version of MLO that uses multiple layers of liquid crystalline polymer (LCP) to form thin substrates and devices that contain embedded passive components such as filters, baluns, diplexers and triplexers.  LTLO is a patented, multilayer parallel process where individual layers are circuitized, tested and co-laminated at temperatures below 280 °C to form a multi-layer structure. Both stacked and staggered via structures are supported providing high routing and embedded component density.

The triplexer fabricated with LTLO measures only 2.6 x 2.4 x 0.65 mm and has lower insertion loss and higher rejection than larger ceramic triplexers. LTLO components can be used in PWBs and SiP substrates to reduce the cost and size of multi-band wireless products.

“The triplexer is an excellent component to showcase the advantages of our advanced organic laminate process and high Q component designs”, noted George White, JMD’s founder and CTO. “LTLO uses a novel lamination and via fill process to dramatically reduce the cycle time and cost of fabricating advanced embedded passive components.”

JMD plans to make the LTLO process and component library available to customers and partners in the first quarter of 2009.
